It’s time to learn how to make hamburger buns!

Follow our instructions step-by-step, and you won’t have any trouble making burger rolls.

Step 1

We’ll start preparing the best hamburger buns by getting a small bowl or a measuring cup. In it, combine warm water, warm milk, sugar, and yeast.

Leave it for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes bubbly.

Step 2

Get a large bowl and whisk both types of flour and salt together. Then, add the butter.

Use your finger to rub the butter into the flour.

Step 3

Now, add the yeast mixture from step one and a beaten egg to the bowl. Use a dough scraper to combine everything into a new dough.

This time, it will be more sticky and relatively moist.

Step 4

Flour a flat surface, then use a silicone scraper to move the dough onto it.

The dough will be moister than usual, and you won’t be able to work with it at this point.

Step 5

Many beginners will be tempted to add more flour, so it will be easier to knead the dough in a traditional way.

Instead, make the burger rolls by picking up the dough with your scraper, then slamming it back onto the counter.

Don’t be afraid to really slam it. It will feel great, too.

Repeat this process for a few minutes. After you flip the burger bread a few times, you’ll notice it’s sticking to the counter a bit less.

If this doesn’t happen, dust the counter with flour, then slowly turn the dough in it. You’re only dusting the surface – You’re still not kneading by hand.

Keep repeating the “pick up and slam” process until the dough stops sticking to the surface. Once that happens, form a dough ball and proceed to step 6.

Step 6

Place your ball-shaped dough into a greased bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap and leave for one or two hours.

During that time, the dough will double in size. Even if it takes more time than we assumed, let the dough rise before you proceed to the following steps.

Step 7

Get a large baking sheet, line it with parchment paper, and leave until we need it later.

Step 8

It’s time to split the dough.

This part you decide by yourself. We usually do eight pieces and divide the dough using a scraper.

However, some people prefer to be a bit more precise. If you’re one of them, weigh your dough, divide the weight into how many pieces you want, then use the scale to make equal parts.

If you’re following our recipe and making eight dough balls, each of them will be around 100 grams.

Step 9

If your burger bread dough still shows to be too sticky to work with, pour a small amount of flour, and dust the surface once again.

Step 10

Form each of the eight pieces into dough balls. Place the future burger rolls onto the prepared baking sheet.

Leave about 2-3 inches between them, and cover everything with a kitchen towel.

It’s time to let the dough double again. So, come back and check on it in about an hour or two.

Step 11

Get a large shallow roasting pan, fill it with water, then place it on the lowest rack of the oven.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F with a rack in the center.

Step 12

Beat the remaining egg, and use it to brush the buns. Make sure you get the entire rolls! If you don’t, some pieces will be pale and not attractive to the eye.

Sprinkle the sesame seeds, and it’s baking time.

Step 13

Put the burger bread into the oven and give it a decent 15 minutes.

Step 14

Once the rolls have turned golden brown, take them out of the oven and transfer them to a rack so they can cool off.

Tips To Make the Best Hamburger Buns

Following the recipe is simple, but pay attention to these details to ensure you always get the best burger buns.

  • Don’t add too much flour

Keep in mind that this dough is quite sticky. Adding flour will make it easier to work with, but the results you’ll get won’t be as good. So, if you’re struggling to work with the dough, add flour, but as little as possible.

  • Be patient

This type of dough rises quite slowly. We know you want to try your burger as soon as possible, but patience is key to getting the best result.

Have the time in the back of your head, but always judge the dough based on how much it’s risen. Once it’s doubled in size, you can proceed.

  • Weighing will give the most precise results

Using your hand to cut the dough into smaller pieces will give you decent results. If you aren’t obsessed with details, no harm will be done.

However, if you’d like to have each bun be the same size, we advise using a scale. By weighing out the pieces, you’ll make sure each bun is the same, so every burger can look alike.

  • Don’t forget the sesame

Some people don’t bother with topping the buns with sesame seeds, but we believe it’s a valuable addition. Aside from it tasting well, the composition will look whole.

You’re used to seeing burger buns with sesame seeds on TV, so there’s no reason your homemade recipe should be any different. Go the extra mile, get the sesame seeds, and enjoy a proper burger.
