Can Healthy Burgers Have Beef?

Coming into this article, you probably believed that all healthy hamburger recipes aren’t rich in taste. Most of them don’t have any condiments, cheese, or meat, right? NO! With our recipe, you get to enjoy all that.

Most people take the beef right away, but that doesn’t have to be the case when making a low-calorie burger. Instead, we’ve used lean beef, with less than 10% fat.

Using ground beef with a 93/7 ratio will add fewer calories than using the same amount of ground turkey. So, don’t underestimate the value of high-quality lean beef, and add it to your recipe.

Not all healthy hamburger recipes require extensive ingredient lists. This one includes just the basic stuff, with a few extra spices. Adding some extra flavor to lean burgers is crucial to a tasty result.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef (extra-lean)

You’re free to use any type of lean ground meat for this recipe. In our opinion, beef has the best calorie-to-flavor ratio. If you have access to ground bison, try making healthy burgers with it. It’s quite the substitute.

  • Dried minced onion

Go to the spice rack in your supermarket and look for dehydrated minced onion. If you can’t find it, you can substitute it with fresh ingredients.

  • Ranch seasoning

Just one teaspoon of ranch seasoning will make all the difference in the flavor of this burger. Add it to the mix and let the magic happen.

  • Toppings

This is up to you. Everyone has their preference when it comes to burger toppings, so you should go for what you like. Our favorite combo is American cheese with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Of course, don’t forget the burger sauce. Just try not to go overboard with it and add too many calories.

  • Buns

There are many options to choose from, but most of them have similar flavors. The choice is down to you, so feel free to pick your favorite burger buns before making our recipe.

  • Worcestershire sauce

For some extra flavor, add Worcestershire sauce to the mix as well.

Instructions

There are two approaches you can take when making lean burgers. Either go with the classic grilling method and prepare the burgers outside. Or, use the stovetop and make the meal in the kitchen. Feel free to do what’s more convenient.

  • Step 1 – Making the patties

To start this process, we’ll have to make the patties. We do that by adding the meat, ranch, onions, and Worcestershire sauce to a large bowl.

Use your hands to combine and mix all the ingredients. Don’t do it for too long, or it won’t affect the meat properly. You’ll end up with tough, dry burgers, and that’s what we’re all trying to avoid.

Form four patties out of your meat mixture and form a small dent in the center of each one. This will allow them to stay flat while cooking.

  • Step 2 – Refrigeration

If you have time, leave the patties in the fridge for a while. It will make the meat a bit more stiff and easier to cook.

  • Step 3 – Prepping the toppings

You don’t have to sit around and wait during the refrigeration period. You can prep the topping during that time. So, start slicing the tomatoes, tearing the lettuce, and chopping the onions.

  • Step 4 – Grilling

Lean burgers don’t need too much time on the heat. Give each patty about 3 minutes a side, and it will be ready to go. If cheese is in your recipe, put it on top of the patties after the second flip. Give the cheese about a minute to melt, then remove the patties from the grill.

The instructions are quite similar if you’re using a stovetop instead of the grill. Simply make sure to preheat the skillet, add a bit of olive oil inside, and start cooking over medium heat. The cooking time depends on your stove, but 3-5 minutes should do the trick.

  • Step 5 – Assembling the burger

Now that you’ve prepped the additions and cooked the burger, all that’s left to do is put it all together.

Firstly, put some sauce on the bottom of the bun. Then, place a leaf of lettuce, followed by the patty. On top of the cheese, add the tomato and the onions, and top it off with the second half of the bun.

Now, grab the burgers with two hands and enjoy the mess!

Healthy Sides for Burgers

We all know where everything can go wrong. All the healthy ingredients in the burger don’t mean anything if you have a caloric side dish along with it.

Here are some of the healthy sides for burgers you should consider next time:

  • Spinach dip
  • Deviled eggs
  • Potato salad
  • Coleslaw
  • Chickpea salad
  • Greek pasta salad
  • Fruit pizza

  • Form the burgers evenly

This way, you can use the same cooking time for each burger and have each patty fit the buns you prepare. Make sure you plan for the patty to shrink while cooking and always go for wider over thicker patties.

  • Do not press the patties while cooking

We know it’s a reflex, and it makes you think that the burger is cooking more quickly. However, all you’re doing is squeezing out the fat, which gives your pattie its flavor. Leave the juices inside, and never press burgers while they cook.

  • Don’t overcook

Dry burgers are what we all wish to avoid. Well-done shouldn’t be the temperature you’re aiming for if you’re preparing lean burgers. So, keep an eye on the patties and take them off the heat in time.
