Ingredients

  • Four large onions (Vidalia or sweet)
  • 3 tbsps cornstarch

These are the items you need to start the process. Make sure the onions are sliced into thin rings and left in cold water for at least 10 minutes.

Batter Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Baking powder
  • 3 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 1/4 cup of Ice-cold water

You can adjust the amount of water you’re spending if you wish the batter to be thicker.

Kitchen Items You’ll Need

  • Oil

You’ll need some oil for frying the homemade onion rings. Pour about 1″ high into a large frying pan, and it should be enough.

  • Large mixing bowl

It’s going to be filled with ice. After you mix the batter, you’ll keep its bowl in this one to keep your mix cold.

  • Kitchen thermometer

Clip it on the side of your pan and keep an eye on the temperature of the oil.

  • Cookie sheet

You’ll need it to drain the excess oil from the onion rings. Get some paper towels and a metal cooking rack, and you’ll solve that issue.

It’s time to learn how to make onion rings!

Step 1

Let’s start by mixing the dry ingredients. Get them all in a mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Then, proceed to step 2.

Step 2

We can begin heating the oil. Attach the thermometer to the side and keep an eye on the rising temperature. You’ll need it to hit 375 degrees F.

Step 3

While you wait for the oil to reach the wanted temperature, you can prepare the onions.

Take them out of the cold water, and dry them with paper towels. It’s best to remove as much moisture as you can.

Step 4

Toss the slices of onion with the cornstarch. Try getting some on each slice.

Step 5

It’s time to combine the two bowls. Combine the cold water and dry batter ingredients, and start mixing the batter.

Make sure you’re leaving no lumps behind using a whisk and adjust the amount of water-based on your thickness preferences.

Step 6

Once you’ve prepared the batter, you can proceed to the following steps. But, making sure your mixture stays cold is crucial to the cooking result.

So, leave the batter bowl placed over the container with ice water and keep the mix cold while you finish the recipe.

Step 7

By now, the thermometer has reached 375, giving you the thumbs up to start cooking.

Take a handful of onion slices and dip them in the batter. Make sure the entire pieces are coated, and only then proceed to fry the chips.

Step 8

Drop the battered rings into the oil. Don’t let the slices touch in the first few moments of cooking. This will stop them from sticking together.

Step 9

Cook the onion rings for 2-3 minutes, then flip on the other side. Cook for the same time, then proceed.

Step 10

Don’t forget the thermometer! You have to watch the temperature and adjust your stovetop to keep it at 375 throughout the cooking process.

Step 11

Once the rings have reached a golden-brown color, you can take them out of the oil.

Place them immediately on the cooking rack aligned with paper towels and let them drain the oil.

Step 12

Repeat everything from step 7 to the end until you’ve spent all the onions you have.

Step 13

Turn off the heat and set the pan on the side.

Onion Ring Tips

Keep an eye on a few things while following the recipe. We’ll explain what to look out for and why, so check out our tips on making onion rings.

The Batter Must Be Cold

We’ve all made the rookie mistake of not keeping the batter cold. That doesn’t mean you should be one of us.

Keeping the batter cold makes it stick better to the onion while frying. It seems as if the heat-cold contrast makes the batter stick and creates perfectly crisp onion rings.

Watch the Temperature

After testing out many possible variations, we’ve found the 375 degrees F temperature to be perfect for making onion rings.

If it gets lower, the onions soak in too much oil. If it’s higher, the slices likely might burn.

So, use a thermometer and keep an eye on the temperature. It plays a significant factor in the result of your preparations.

Use a Mandoline Slicer

Having evenly sliced onion rings can be the difference between perfection and decent results. If you really want to impress your guests, we advise investing in a mandoline slicer.

This kitchen item won’t set you back much but will help you immensely. It will allow you to cut the onions quickly into thin pieces of even thickness. Give it a shot and see if it’s worth having in the kitchen.

Work in Batches

It’s important not to overcrowd the pan. If you put too many rings into the oil, they will stick together and not turn the way you wish.

So, take your time and work in batches. Fry only a few rings and a time, and you’ll be good.

Choose the Oil Carefully

When it comes to deep-frying, some oils are better than others. You can go with Safflower, peanut, sunflower, or canola.

Those are all decent options for this type of recipe.
